The second half is finally here! There are a lot of great storylines heading into the second half and a lot of intrigue in some of the division races. Before we get into the tips let’s check out a few teams to watch.

  • Cleveland Indians: The Indians started the season as one of the worst defensive teams in the league, but since they called up Francisco Lindor they have been one of the best. Their pitching staff is already awesome with the top four being strikeout machines. An improved defense and some better hitting could see this team make a run toward the Wild Card. I expect a big second half from them.
  • Houston Astros: They’ve run into a big of injury bad luck lately, but that should turn around. They’ll get Jed Lowrie back at third base shortly which should improve them both offensively and defensively. Plus, they seem like a team ready to make a move. They are currently +150 to win the division, but I would consider them the favorite.
  • Toronto Blue Jays: Their +82 run differential is tops in the AL East, but they have struggled to win thanks mostly to their pitching. The offense has been amazing and even a slight drop off shouldn’t matter. They have a 10-18 record in one run games that they have to address in the bullpen. If this team adds a strong starter or reliever (preferably both, Cueto and Chapman maybe?) then they are my favorite to win the AL East. Keep an eye on the Jays at +400 to win the East.
  • Chicago Cubs: They just called up super prospect Kelly Schwarber for a run at catcher. They still have Rafael Soriano to add to the bullpen. They have tons of trade chips if they want to make a move. This is a scary second half team.
  • Washington Nationals: They are in first place and they are going to stay there, but this is still a team to watch. The sheer amount of injuries they’ve had has been devastating and if they can have a healthier second half we might see the team that everyone thought would cruise to the World Series in the second half.

We have months left of baseball before the playoffs start so let’s put that on the back burner for now and get into today’s tips.

Our first tip features a team we just mentioned as the Los Angeles Dodgers head to Washington to take on the Nationals. This is definitely a match-up of playoff teams and it could be a preview of the NLCS based on the way each team has played in the first half. The Dodgers will send Mike Bolsinger to the mound against Jordan Zimmerman and I really like Zimmerman tonight. In 10 home starts this season he has a 2.27 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and is averaging 6 2/3 innings per start. He pitched well in two starts against the Dodgers last season as well.

For some reason the Pirates are underdogs in Milwaukee tonight against Mike Fiers. Last time they faced Fiers they tagged him for five runs in five innings. Not to mention that Pittsburgh is arguably the hottest team in baseball right now, fresh off a sweep of the Cardinals heading into the break. Fiers has actually fared worse at home than on the road with a 4.72 ERA at Miller Park. Ride the Pirates.

Andrew McCutchen is .375/.412/1.125 against Fiers. Roster him at: FanDuel

The total of tonight’s San Diego versus Colorado game is set at just 7 runs. If this was in Colorado, that would be a reason to jump for joy but unfortunately it is at PetCo Park. Still, this game features two pitchers with ERAs over four runs and one of the best offenses in the league. Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez have combined for 5 homeruns in 25 at-bats against James Shields. While Jedd Gyroko is 12-for-18 against Jorge De La Rosa in his career and Matt Kemp is hitting .409/.426/.773 against him. There will be runs.
