July 20th, 2015 MLB Betting Tips

What a crazy weekend in baseball. We saw the team that many were crowning the best team in baseball heading into the All-Star break, the Pirates, get swept by the lowly Brewers. We saw the Nationals have lighting problems on Friday night where the lights went off in the stadium not once, not twice, but three times before they had to suspend play of the game. We even saw the first rainout in Anaheim since 1995! Zack Greinke also continued his scoreless streak in a defeat of the Nationals and Max Scherzer. After that one he’s definitely taken the lead in the Cy Young race, but there is still a lot of baseball left to play this season.

A new week of baseball starts today and we have the tips to get you through the night. The story of today will be runs scored and lots of them. I could make the case for every game tonight going over except for one. Remember this when building your daily fantasy teams. Runs will rule the day so make sure you have the hitters to capitalize on it and don’t spend on a pitcher who is going to hurt you.

The Phillies take on the Rays tonight in Philadelphia. Matt Moore is going to the mound again for Tampa Bay and he has not looked good since returning from Tommy John surgery. In his three starts he has a 7.07 ERA and a 1.929 WHIP; and he has only completed five innings in one of those games. He has not looked good. On the Phillies side, it’s not much better as David Buchanan and his 7.58 ERA/1.854 WHIP heads to the mound. This one won’t be pretty and it will go over the total.

Maikel Franco crushes lefties and is a steal at $3,100 at: FanDuel

In Detroit, the Tigers host the Mariners in a game that could feature some fireworks. Alfredo Simon goes to the mound for the Tigers and he has been killing them lately. A 10.53 ERA and 2.634 WHIP over his last three starts and, no, those numbers are not a misprint. He goes against JA Happ for the Mariners who holds a 5.59 ERA away from the friendly confines of Safeco Field. The Tigers .795 team OPS against lefties won’t help him much either. Take the over.

Out west we have the Giants and Padres squaring off. The Petco Park effect is in play here as the total on this one is set at just seven runs. This is despite the combined ERA of the starting pitchers being over 9.5 runs. The Giants have beaten trends on the road throughout the season as road games have gone over 29 times and under just 14. By the same metric Padres home games have gone 25-15. This one just feels like an over where the total is too low. Jump on it.

The Red Sox and Angels will play a double header today, but we’re just going to focus on the second game for our purposes. Andrew Heaney has been a beast since getting called up. In four starts he has a 1.32 ERA and a 0.842 WHIP and is striking out just under a batter per inning. The Red Sox haven’t scored since the All-Star break and are just generally a mess. Andrew Heaney is my fantasy value play of the day.
