Last night we saw the New York Mets grab a win to put themselves into a tie for first place in the NL East. The Mets run differential doesn’t show them as one of the best teams in the National League as it currently sits at -2 for the season, but when you are in first place in the beginning of August you are in it. It doesn’t matter how you got there, it just matters what you do for the rest of the season. With their young starters, their upgraded offense and steady bullpen they look like they are going to make a run at this thing. With the Mets playing good as well as the first place Royals and Astros it is a good time to be a fan of teams that weren’t all that great just a couple of years ago.

Baseball rolls on today and we have four tips for three games. We finished 3-1 on Friday and will continue making picks through the end of the season. There’s only 13 weeks left so let’s make them count.

MLB Betting Tips and Daily Fantasy Advice:

The Padres face the Brewers at Miller Park tonight. The Brewers went into full on sell mode, trading away Carlos Gomez and Geraldo Parra at the deadline along with Jonathan Broxton and Aramis Ramirez. The Padres on the other hand decided to keep onto all their expiring contracts and make a run at the playoffs (?), I guess. They don’t really have a chance at the playoffs, but they should have a chance tonight against the Brewers. While they have struggled against righties this season they are facing Wily Peralta who is only making his second start in a month. Rust should be a factor and the Padres will benefit from a more hitter friendly ballpark than they are used to. Tyson Ross, pitching for the Padres, has been excellent lately as well and will definitely do well against the weak Brewers offense.

The tied for first place Mets take on the Marlins tonight and look to continue their strong play of late. They send Bartolo Colon to the mound against Tom Koehler tonight. Colon is the weak link of the rotation, but he has pitched well against the Marlins. He’s pitched in Miami twice this year and is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA this season and he faces a Marlins offense that has been very weak without Giancarlo Stanton. The Mets offense has been doing just enough to win all season and now that they have reinforcements I feel a lot safer putting my confidence behind them.

It’s a showdown in Texas with the first place Astros taking on the Rangers. The Astros have been the top homerun hitting team in the league thus far this season and they should add to that total tonight against CJ Wilson. Wilson has allowed 1.2 homeruns per nine innings over the past two seasons and opposing hitters are smacking him around to a .329 wOBA. I expect the Astros to score some serious runs and they could be the top scoring team tonight. Lance McCullers goes for the Astros and I could him giving up some runs. His walk rate is a bit high and the Rangers have hit righties hard this season. This one is going over.
