August 5th, 2015 MLB Tips

Another good night of games last night in MLB. The Mariners grabbed a big win in Colorado as the Rockies bullpen continues to be a dumpster fire. The Jays beat the Twins to push further past them in the AL Wild Card race, the Mets continued their winning ways, the Phillies upset the Dodgers and the Royals defeated the Tigers 5-1. The playoff races are taking shape and teams are beginning to separate, but there is still awhile to go until the playoffs start up.

Today we have some early games that we will not be covering. There is just no line that really grabs us on the early slate, but we do have picks for three of tonight’s games. Let’s take a look at those and get our picks in for tonight. If you are playing daily Fanduel in the morning today it is best to focus on the Mariners. Franklin Guiterez should start today and he’s been great against lefties. He’s cheap too.

MLB Betting Tips and Daily Fantasy Advice:

In a game without much bearing on the playoff races, the Padres face the Brewers in Milwaukee. Taylor Jungmann goes for the Brewers tonight and he has been their lone bright spot this season. His 2.23 ERA is fantastic and 1.10 WHIP is also very nice. He’s gone 6+ in five of his last six games and goes against a team that ranks 12th in OPS against RHs in the National League. He goes against Ian Kennedy who has struggled with the long ball this season. His 20% HR/FB rate is unbelievably high and, while it should eventually come down, the homer friendly Miller Park is not the place to do that.

The Cubs and Pirates continue their series tonight with Dan Haren making his Cubs’ debut against Jeff Locke. Haren has been the beneficiary of good luck and a spacious ballpark thus far this season in his time with Miami. The Pittsburgh ballpark is still pitcher friendly, but I am expecting some regression here tonight. There is a full run difference between his ERA and FIP and that will normalize. In two starts against the Pirates last season he allowed a .870 OPS, but somehow only a 2.67 ERA. I am expecting his luck not to go so good tonight. On the other side of the ball is Jeff Locke who is solid, but unspectacular. The Cubs hitter have hit lefties a bit better than righties this season and should take advantage of that tonight to send this game over.

In our final game we have the Twins taking on the Blue Jays. Drew Hutchison goes for the Jays with his sparkly 2.47 home ERA. He goes against Tyler Duffey who is making his major league debut against the Blue Jays. Outside of Henry Owens for the Sox last night it’s hard to think of a worse first game match-up than this 2015 Jays offense. Duffey is solid though and I think he will do well in limiting the Jays offense. He held an ERA under 2.75 over Double-A and Triple-A thus far this season so it’s not like he’s a lame duck out there. I think this total is set a bit high because of the rookie and that it will go under.
