August 7th, 2015 MLB Tips

A big weekend of MLB games is about to kick off. We have some excellent match-ups including a potential playoff series between the Dodgers and Pirates, a battle of the AL East between Toronto and New York that will be very interesting to watch and a series between AL Wild Card contenders Baltimore and Los Angeles that could do a lot to clear the crowd. Plus, it’s Jose Fernandez day as he faces a weak Braves lineup. He could do something special tonight, but I say that every week. I really like this weekend’s slate of games and especially tonight’s. Let’s take a closer look and see what we have.

MLB Betting Tips and Daily Fantasy Advice:

In a series that doesn’t matter too much for the playoff races, the Red Sox take on the Tigers. The Tigers offense has taken a hit with the losses of Miguel Cabrera and Yoenis Cespedes, but they are still one of the tops in the league. Victor Martinez, Ian Kinsler and JD Martinez can all still rake and they will get their chance to show their stuff tonight against Joe Kelly. Boston’s Kelly has been indicative of the problems that have plagued the Red Sox all season, mainly that they give up a ton of runs. I like that trend to continue tonight. Daniel Norris goes for the Tigers and I like the way he has looked thus far. He should do enough to hold the lead that the offense should provide him.

A big series is kicking off in New York tonight between the Jays and Yankees. New York currently holds a 4.5 game lead over Toronto in the AL East and this series could do a lot to decide how the final standings end. Tonight the Yankees send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to try and extend their division lead, but I don’t love his chances. The Jays offense has been just amazing all season long and despite his 11-2 record, Eovaldi has just a 4.30 ERA. He’s in for a long night against this Jays offense.

A match-up of two hitting teams in Arizona could offer some fireworks as the Reds meet the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. While neither pitcher in this game is what I would consider bad, I would consider them both to be over their head tonight. The heat in Arizona should help the ball fly in the hitter’s park that is Chase Field. Joey Votto, Todd Frazier, Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and AJ Pollock are all strong fantasy options here as this one should go over the posted total.

In the late game the Padres host the Phillies. In the grand scheme of things this game doesn’t really matter all that much, but I like it for betting purposes. James Shields has struggled this season and tonight he faces an offense that has been hitting among the best in the league during the second half. The Phillies will send their young pitching prospect Aaron Nola to the mound who has looked great in his first three starts of the season. Tonight will be his fourth and I think he benefits from the spacious PetCo Park. The offense should provide the spark and Nola should hold it.
