Things are really heating up in the AL East. Last night we saw the Yankees lose their fourth straight in extra innings while the Blue Jays won their ninth straight against Oakland. Toronto now sits just a 1/2 game back of New York for the AL East lead. There is just a little over a month and a half of baseball left and it promises to be exciting. The Rays and Orioles are both over .500 and not giving up on the AL Wild Card race either. It should be tight out there right down to the wire.

Meanwhile, in the National League the three best records are the Cubs, Pirates and Cardinals and they all play in the NL Central. That means two of those teams will be playing in the one game Wild Card playoff game. All three teams will be playing to win every game for the rest of the season, but it’s hard to imagine the Pirates or Cubs catching the Cardinals. Maybe they could work out a trade to another division?

We have a full slate of games today with every team in action. Let’s take a look at our games for the day and make our picks.

The Texas Rangers take on the Minnesota Twins today and they’ll send Nick Martinez to the mound. He hasn’t pitched well this season with a really bad walk rate, HR/9 and low strikeout totals. While his ERA is just 3.91 ERA it should be a lot higher as his 4.92 FIP shows. His work against righties has been especially bad which doesn’t bode him well against the righty heavy Twins lineup. I like the Twins as a stack tonight and I like them to win this game.

A big series continues tonight as the Pirates and Cardinals continue their series. Tonight is the best match-up of the series as Gerrit Cole and Michael Wacha do battle on the mound. These are two of the best pitchers each team has to offer and this one should be a low scoring affair. I’m talking like 2-1, 3-2 type of game. This will be a playoff atmosphere and both team should struggle to score runs.

The Indians host the Yankees tonight as the Yankees try to snap their four game losing streak. They won’t be doing themselves any favors tonight as they start CC Sabathia. The former ace has been a mess this season and is allowing a .321 batting average and 21 homeruns to opposing right handed hitters. The Indians lineup has enough big righty hitters and the talent is there to rock Sabathia tonight. On the other side is Danny Salazar who has been excellent lately and could shut down the struggling Yankees offense.

Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against the Nationals tonight in LA. Jordan Zimmerman goes for the Nationals and this should be a great pitching match-up. Well, it would be if Kershaw wasn’t on a completely different planet right now. In his last five starts he’s averaged 8 innings per start and 10 strikeouts per game with a 0.90 ERA. He’s at the point where you’re surprised if he gives up a run and that is the kind of thing I like to bet under on.
