Tonight is a tough one for fantasy players because there are only eight games on the main slate and there is a strong chance of a rainout in at least two of them (possibly three). Stud pitchers like Jake Arrieta and David Price are off the market because of rain concerns which leaves us with a short list of options. This can be very good if you pick the right players on an otherwise low scoring night. I find my cash percentage to be much higher when there is less than the maximum amount of games because the options just feel more obvious to me. It also seems as if your mistakes are less pronounced as have the 12th best catcher is better than having the 30th. Whatever the reason, I enjoy the shorter slates.

We’re focusing on two games for our tips tonight and then finishing off the post with some quick fantasy hits. Let’s get into it.

When the Tigers meet the Indians tonight we’re hoping for different results than last week. Last week Alfredo Simon managed to hold the Indians to just two runs while Danny Salazar was rocked for six. That seems backwards, but it’s just what happened. Simon is one of our very favorite pitchers to target in fantasy and we like him as a target again tonight. His last start against the Indians should be encouraging as he is just not the type of pitcher who can shut down a team twice in a week with the same weak stuff. I like the Indians a lot tonight and will be stacking them in my fantasy lineups. The Tigers could also score some runs tonight as well as they did just do very well against Salazar last week. I’m expecting a nice bounce back from Salazar, but the Tigers are still a really tough offense and he should get tagged for a few runs.

The Brewers and Pirates begin a series tonight and this game is my favorite over of the night. The Pirates are sending AJ Burnett who looked positively washed up before his recent DL stint, giving up 10+ hits in three straight starts before going away. In his 15th season it’s easy to wonder if he still has it. He goes against Wily Peralta who I just don’t believe has it at all. While he’s posted decent counting stats in his career, his peripheral numbers just do not show him to be a very good pitcher. He faces a tough Pirates offense tonight and I think they hit him hard. I like hitters from both sides in this one, but the Pirates a bit more.

Fantasy Quick Tips:

  • John Lamb is a great cheap starter. He has a 3.56 FIP in his first five starts with great strikeout and walk rates. He faces a Cardinals offense that has been struggling lately and is the fourth worst in all of baseball in wOBA against lefties.
  • Shelby Miller is coming off of a start where he was hit hard by the Nationals and has been under four strikeouts in his past two starts. This could be a small sample size, but it could be a sign that he is tiring out. The Mets offense can hit just about anyone right now so they are definitely worth a play against him tonight.
