2017 World Series Odds

Updated: November 22, 2016

The latest 2017 World Series odds are out from 5Dimes and they currently have the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs as a big favorite to win it again next year. They are +375 with the next best odds being +1000. What a strange world this is when the Cubs are overwhelming World Series favorites two years in a row.

Of course, even if they win the division and make the playoffs again as a top seed, the odds of them winning again are still against them. With the current playoff format, even one of the best teams in baseball has merely a 20% chance of winning the World Series. In this case, you are probably better off betting that the Chicago Cubs won’t win the World Series than they will. That being said, if you are going to bet on any one individual team: the Cubs are probably the safest bet of all of them.

There is a lot of free agency left before we even get to spring training and the outlook of many teams could still change with big names like Yoenis Cespedes, Rich Hill, Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen still out there. One of the lower odds teams could see their fortunes change quite a bit between now and Opening Day.

As of now, one of the better plays is the Houston Astros +1600. They ran into a bit of bad luck last season and they weren’t able to overcome a really horrible start. The Rangers far out played their run projections and took the division handily, but it’s hard to imagine them repeating that feat. They’ve already made some solid moves to shore up the lineup this offseason and you should expect their rotation to fare better in 2017. This is definitely a team to watch next year.

Depending on what happens with Cespedes, we also put the Mets +1700 as a team to watch. They managed to make the playoffs despite basically their whole rotation hitting the DL. If they can have better injury luck next year they should be right back in the thick of things in the National League. Don’t forget, that rotation is what shut down the Cubs World Series chances in 2015.

As far as a deep sleeper, how about the Rockies +10000? They showed a much improved rotation this year and the scoring will always be there. They have said they are “going for it” this year and new manager Bud Black should be an improvement over Walt Weiss. Their biggest obstacle is probably getting past the teams in their division, Los Angeles in San Francisco who should both be good again, but this team certainly has the tools to make some noise if they do get to the playoffs. It’s a good bet if you like to dream.
