Yoenis Cespedes Back to the Mets

Ever since the trade that sent Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets it has felt like a match made in heaven. Cespedes has put up some of the best and most consistent numbers of his career while with the Mets and the Mets have went from fringe playoff team to World Series contender.

Just looking at his career numbers and you can clearly see that the Mets have been the best thing to ever happen to him and I’m sure he gladly signed the 4-year $110 million dollar contract.

Since joining the Mets he’s seen career high homerun numbers, the two best OPS seasons of his career and a ton of love from the New York faithful. One got the feeling that this offseason wasn’t so much about where Cespedes would go, but how much the Mets would re-sign him for. Cespedes didn’t want to leave, the Mets didn’t want him to leave and it just seemed to be a matter of how much he would sign for.

The $110 million dollars is definitely good for Cespedes, but the four years is great for the Mets. He’ll still have some left in the tank by the time the contract expires, but the Mets won’t be locked into paying him past his 34 year old season. It’s hard to say what he will look like at that point, but this deal definitely feels like a win for both sides.

If the Mets can have a healthy pitching staff in 2017 then it is easy to see them back in the hunt for the World Series. They won 87 games in 2016 with a rash of injuries and if they are able to have a healthier year in 2017 I could see them being the biggest threat to the Chicago Cubs chances of repeating. Don’t forget it was only a year ago that the New York Mets swept the Cubs in the NLCS and with Cespedes back on board they are in prime position to make another run.

This was the second big returning player of the offseason for the Mets as Neil Walker accepted the one-year qualifying offer and will be part of next year’s squad. Walker had a .823 OPS in 113 games last year before injuries took their toll. If he can stay healthy next year that would be a big boost to them as well.

Of course, there are still question marks out there. Jay Bruce was a deadline deal that didn’t quite work out in their favor and he could be moved this offseason. The Mets just like every other team out there could probably use some help with pitching. If he is able to bring some back that would be a big boost to this team. They let Bartolo Colon walk this offseason, but saw big help from Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman that should carry over into next year. The Mets are definitely a team to watch next year.
