Dodgers bringing back Kenley Jansen, Justin Turner

The Dodgers are very close to bringing back all of the top three big free agents they sent to the market this winter. They already re-signed Rich Hill, just re-signed Kenley Jansen and are reportedly bringing back Justin Turner. While the offseason has been mostly quiet for them otherwise, they are still making the moves that should keep a 91 win team intact.

The signing of Jansen was a big one for them though as the bullpen was definitely their biggest weakness in 2016 and losing him could’ve been potentially disastrous. He signed a 5-year, $80MM deal that includes an opt-out after year three. He’ll be 32 at that point so it’s hard to imagine him opting out at that point in his career. Then again, he has been remarkably consistent throughout his career and anything can happen considering the way that revenue is expected to grow over the next few years.

As for Justin Turner, he was a huge part of their offense last season and at times was their offense. He solidifies third base and will be apart of the lineup for the next four years as he reportedly inked a $64MM deal. Turner has been a completely different player since coming to LA and the Dodgers hope he’ll be able to continue his consistent performance.

For the Dodgers, they have now completed their three main goals of the 2016 offseason as they have re-signed Jansen, Hill and Turner. FanGraphs projected standings currently see them as a 95-win team, tied with the Chicago Cubs for best in all of baseball. It’s hard not to see them hitting that total without making another move. A full season of Rich Hill combined with a healthy Clayton Kershaw, Kenta Maeda and uber prospects Julio Urias and Jose DeLeon right behind them. This is one of the deepest and most talented pitching staffs in the league.

While the offense does have question marks, they should still put up enough to put this team in the upper echelon of the league. Turner is a big help. The question of Adrian Gonzalez being done is a big one as well as what is going on with Yasiel Puig, but this is a great team no matter how you slice it. The Dodgers are expected to make a move this offseason for a second baseman and have been linked to many big names including Ian Kinsler and Brian Dozier. That could be a potentially game changing acquisition for this team and send them into the clear top spot in offseason projections.

The Dodgers are always one of the most dangerous teams in the league and these moves show why. While other teams could build a front office like theirs, collect prospects like they have and generally make smart moves. Very few teams can push their payroll this high and retain all of their own free agents. LA has been scary for years and 2017 could be the year they translate that into a World Series championship.

LA is currently at +1500, that could be a great future bet.
