2017 World Series Odds Update

Updated: January 17, 2017

The 2017 MLB season is still a few months away, but with the hot stove winding down it’s time to take a look at the updated 2017 World Series Odds from 5Dimes.

The biggest “gainer” in the odds has to be the Boston Red Sox who went from +1200 on November 22nd to +450 today. Trading for Chris Sale will do that for you. He’ll join last year’s Cy Young Rick Porcello and David Price to form one of the best top three rotations in the majors. The offense was excellent last year led by Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. While they will miss David Ortiz, they still should be one of the best teams in the league.

Last year’s American League champions, the Cleveland Indians, saw their odds slightly improve from +1200 to +1000. They have their own big three starters in Corey Kluber, Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco, and an even better “big two” in the bullpen in Andrew Miller and Cody Allen. The addition of Edwin Encarnacion should improve an offense that was already very good with Francisco Lindor and Carlos Santana. Honestly, I’m surprised these odds aren’t a bit better. This is a great value.

The Nationals and Dodgers saw their odds get slightly worse, but there doesn’t seem to be any real rhyme or reason to that. The Nationals improved themselves by adding outfielder Adam Eaton who should slot well in their lineup next to Bryce Harper. The starting pitching is still great led by Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer. They will be in the playoff mix again.

The Dodgers line is actually stranger as many projections systems see them neck and neck with the Cubs as the best team in the NL. They were able to bring back Rich Hill, Kenley Jansen and Justin Turner so they should be the same team they were last year only with a (hopefully) healthier Clayton Kershaw and a full season of Julio Urias. The playoffs are the playoffs, but this is still a solid value as this could be a 92+ win team.

The rest of the big movers just seem odds. The Orioles haven’t done anything except say goodbye to Mark Trumbo and Yovani Gallardo and their odds gained +1500. The Mariners improved a lot since 11/22 and gained +200. The Angels gained +3400 for no real reason. The Rockies went from +10000 to +5500 for… some reason. It can’t be the Ian Desmond signing, can it?

A lot of these lower level teams just feel like shifting the deck chairs. No rhyme or reason.

Then you have the Cubs who haven’t really done much this offseason except not re-sign Aroldis Chapman and trade Jorge Soler for Wade Davis to replace him. They haven’t budged an inch, still at +375. What a weird world we live in where the Cubs are the World Series favorites two straight years.

We’ll know more about how the sportsbooks feel about each individual team shortly when win totals are released, but until then here is the complete 2017 World Series Odds as of today.
